Events

If there's one thing that stands out about Guyanese, it's our love for coming together and celebrating! Many festivals and events showcase Guyana's colourful ethnic diversity, from the pulse-pounding drumming of the Rupununi Rodeo to the vibrant floats and costumes of the Mashramani parade. These events come alive through road parades and processions, street jams with infectious music, and parties that last into the night. So, mark your calendars and plan your trip around one of these exciting events:

  • Mashramani (February): Guyana's vibrant carnival celebration explodes with colour, music, and dance. Expect elaborate costumes, pulsating calypso rhythms, and a contagious energy that will have you moving in the streets!

  • Phagwah (Holi) (March): This joyous Hindu festival of colours throws Guyana into a vibrant spectacle. People playfully throw coloured powder on each other, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

  • Rupununi Rodeo (Easter Weekend): Head to Lethem on the Guyana-Brazil border for a taste of cowboy culture. This rodeo features exciting competitions, lively entertainment, and a chance to experience the unique traditions of the Rupununi people.

  • Bartica Regatta (Easter Weekend): This legendary boat race held in Bartica attracts competitors from all over Guyana. The energy is electric as speedboats race down the Essequibo River, while onshore there are cultural activities, live music, and a festive atmosphere.

  • Indian Arrival Day (May 5th): This national holiday commemorates the arrival of East Indian indentured labourers in Guyana in 1838. Celebrations include cultural performances, parades, and special dishes.

This is just a taste of the many exciting events happening throughout the year in Guyana. With its rich cultural tapestry and friendly people, Guyana is a destination that will leave you with unforgettable memories.
