Given that rivers like Berbice, Corentyne and Canje surround New Amsterdam, the exceptionally fertile land places you right in the middle of rich greenery. This town is one of three situated in the East Berbice Corentyne area (Region 6) with a rich, colonial history evident in its architecture. Getting To And Around

New Amsterdam is best connected to Georgetown and other hubs via road. This requires crossing the Berbice River which requires the use of the Berbice River Bridge or a river taxi. Ferries are also a great way to hop on over to Suriname and villages along the coast or the river.

Air

The closest airport to New Amsterdam in Berbice is in Georgetown - Cheddi Jagan International Airport which connects the country to the rest of the world, and the Eugene F. Correia International Airport (formerly known as Ogle) which facilitates travel to Barbados, Suriname and other domestic locations such as Lethem. There are smaller airstrips located throughout the region, however you need special permission from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority to charter a flight.

Road

Taxis are mainly used to traverse to and around the town of New Amsterdam. Walking is also an easy option. If you’re looking to go further afield, there are fleets of mini-buses and taxis available, which connect major attractions and towns to New Amsterdam. The coastal drive heading towards Georgetown is a main providing beautiful countryside scenery.

River

The Berbice River Bridge and river taxis facilitate crossing the Berbice River to get to the West Coast and Georgetown. You can view their daily retraction schedule here. From the bridge, you turn right at the junction and journey 20 minutes to the town of New Amsterdam. If you use a river taxi, it will take you directly into town.
